Local Authorities
07-09 December 2001
DECLARATION
The mayors assembled at the III Socialist International World Conference in the city of Athens from 7 to 9 December 2001, welcomed the recent news from Cyprus which opens perspectives for the resumption of dialogue between the two communities on that island, under the auspices of the United Nations.
The mayors participating in the Conference see as auspicious the imminent integration of Cyprus in the European Union and hopes that these recent developments will constitute sure steps towards a just and viable solution to the Cyprus issue based on the United Nations resolutions and of other international organisations - in particular regarding human rights - and an end to the line which divides Nicosia, the last capital in the world which suffers such a division.
